Background and Objective: Family caregivers of cancer patients play a crucial role in caregiving, yet their supportive needs are often overlooked. This study aimed to elucidate the supportive care needs of family caregivers of cancer patients.
Methods: This qualitative study employed a directed content analysis approach based on Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory. Data were collected and analyzed through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 20 family caregivers of patients visiting the Imam Khomeini Cancer Institute in Tehran.
Findings: Data analysis yielded 830 initial codes, which were categorized into eight sub-categories and four main domains: spiritual-psychological, sociocultural, environmental, and physical. The identified needs included spiritual care, emotional-psychological support, social support, information acquisition, financial support, caregiving services, physical health, and sexual counseling. Certain needs—such as a sense of existential emptiness, connection with nature, and support from colleagues and employers—had been less frequently reported in previous studies.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that caregivers' needs are multidimensional, and Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory provides a suitable framework for systematically explaining these needs within the Iranian cultural context. The results underscore the necessity of adopting a holistic approach to supporting caregivers.
